Eyes wide open. Glued to the ceiling. Lying awake with my mind racing like a runaway race car.

I count the faint glow-in-the-dark stars from my childhood on the ceiling.

Should I get up?

I look over at the clock 3:29 AM. Too early to get up. But a struggle to fall back to sleep.

All I have on my mind are finances. How am I going to retire? Will it be enough? Am I investing right? Will I need to support my parents too? How do I do it all — house, kids, parents, and still have freedom, time, and travel?

You won’t retire like your parents

My dad recently retired, confidently explaining his plan. His response, like so many others from his generation was a combination of social security, savings, and some small investments that would last him and my mom through retirement.

If you are like 90% of the working US population, then you work a W2 or 9–5 job and see a subtraction on your paycheck every month for social security.
